1) Mosquitoes and flies are causing malaria and other diseases in your area. Write a letter to the Chairman of the municipality to take measures that would help in controlling mosquitoes and flies.

To

The Chairman,

Siliguri Municipality,

Siliguri, Darjeeling.

Sub – Requesting measures to control mosquitoes.

Sir,

I am an inhabitant of Uttar Para under your municipality. The area is badly infested with Mosquitoes and flies. The weedy pools, open drains and stagnant water in ditches have become breeding places of mosquitoes. Heaps of garbage are lying on both sides of the roads. Flies multiple rapidly. As a result, people of the area are suffering from malaria and other diseases. If this solution is allowed to continue, I am afraid, an epidemic may break out in the area any time.

Please make arrangements for the drainage of stagnant water and removal of garbage. Please also see that D. D. T., bleaching powder etc. are sprayed regularly in and around the area. I would request you to take these and other steps to make people feel safe and secure.

Yours faithfully,

Dipankar Roy

2) Write a letter to the Chairman of your Municipality requesting him to sink a few tubes- wells in your locality.

To

The Chairman,

Tamluk Municipality,

Tamluk, East Midnapore

Sub – Prayer for sinking a few tube- wells

Sir,

I beg to draw your kind attention to the acute security of drinking water at Morol Para. It is a thickly populated area. The insufficient and irregular supply of tap water cannot meet the demand of so many people. There are only a few tube- wells in this area. Most of the people are poor. They are unable to sink tube wells on their own arrangements. The situation gets worse in summer when the supply of tap water is very irregular. People are compelled to use pond – water and suffer from water – borne diseases.

Summer is approaching. The condition may be worse this year as two tube wells are not working. Under these circumstances I appeal to you to sink here a few more tube- wells. This can save us form this acute problem of insufficient drinking water. Hope you will sympathetically consider the case and take immediate action.

Yours faithfully,

Subham Kar.

3) Write a letter to the editor of a newspaper about the dangers of reckless driving of the bus or truck driver.

To

The Editor,

The Statement,

Coochbehar – 700051.

Sir,

Your report on road accidents ( Statement, July 20) has shocked me. The report says most of these accounts were caused by reckless driving of the bus or the truck driver. Do the drivers ever think about the harm they cause to people? These careless drivers run their vehicles at breakneck speed even in busy roads. They didn’t hesitate to violate traffic rules and overtake other vehicles. I don’t know, what joy they get from this deadly sport.

The Government should take stern steps against the erring drivers. If a man murders another man, he is treated as a criminal. I see no difference between a murderer and a driver who plays with lives of innocent passengers and pedestrians.

Mrinmoy Pradhan.

4) Write a letter to the editor of a newspaper voicing your protest against smoking in public places.

To

The Editor,

The Telegraph,

Kolkata – 700001.

Sir,

Please allow me to ventilate my views against smoking in public places.

The Government has banned smoking in public places. But it seems, most of the smokers are unaware of it or they did not care. In fact, only a few of them care to obey this prohibition. Some people are seen smoking in gardens, parks, bus- stops, canteens and restaurants. They know it well that smoking is harmful to them and others around them. Yet they go on smoking. These smokers should remember that their harmful habit is affecting public health.

It is not enough to pass laws. The authorities must see that te laws are duly obeyed. Those who are violating the ban on smoking in public places should be published. Smoking in public places must be stopped by all means to protect public health.

5) Write a letter to the Chairman of your Municipality requesting him to set up a park in your locality.

To

The Chairman,

Jalpaiguri Municipality

Purbapara, Jalpaiguri

Sir,

I am a resident of Purbapara in Word No. 09 of your municipality. In our locality we have some skyscrapers but not a single park. Children find no place to play and elderly people no place to walk in the morning. An unowned vacant land in the locality has become a big dustbin. A fuel smell from the rotten garbage is polluting the whole area. This vacant land may be turned into a green grass park. It will become the lung of our locality. Here people will find fresh air and get repose.

I would, therefore, request you to acquire the land and set up a verdant park. The park will not only meet our purpose but also please our eyes. It will also help us to fight pollution.

Yours faithfully

6) Write a letter to the Editor of an English daily about the hazards of using polythene bags.

To

The Editor,

The Statement,

Haldibari, Coochbehar

Sir,

I would request you to publish this letter in your esteemed daily.

Pollution is one of our great problems. We are trying to fight it. We know, polythene bags are causing harm to our environment. The Pollution Control Board has already imposed a ban on polythene bags. Yet these are widely used. Paper and jute bags are rarely seen. People are using only poly bags forgetting the hazards these are creating. We know, polythene cannot be destroyed. Only fire can burn it. But the smoke is very harmful to our health. The thrown away polythene pouches clog the drains. If buried, they prevent the growth of plants. They are user-friendly but not at all eco-friendly.

The authorities should organize awareness campaign. People will willingly obey the ban.

Yours faithfully,

Ayesha Sen
