Dear Shome,

I have just got your pleasing letter. I’m happy, you are getting on well with your studies. But did not become a bookworm. Read something beyond your books. Do you read the daily newspaper? No I don’t see it in the routine that you follow. To be a man of the modern world you must read a newspaper daily. Make it a matter of of routine.

The newspaper tells us what happened in the world yesterday. It forecasts what may happen tomorrow. It gives news and views; it publishes articles, stories and interviews. It gives us something of everything. Read it regularly. You will know more of your country and the present day world. Today you will be a better student; tomorrow you will be a better citizen.

Yours affectionately,

Manas Roy

My dear Anik,

I am writing, as I promised you, about the prize-giving ceremony of our school. It was held yesterday at our Vivekananda Hall.

This year Dr. Karunasindhu Das, Vice-Chancellor of Rabindra Bharati University was our Chief- guest. In an air of solemnly, the program began with a Vedic song. The Secretary of the school then read out the annual report of the school. After this a short cultural program pleased the audience. In this brief but valuable speech, our guest told us about the purpose of education. He then gave away prizes to the students for their brilliant performances in examinations and extra- curriculum activities. I got a prize for my top place in the Sit and Draw competition. After our Headmaster’s vote of thanks to the Chair the students staged the drama ‘Gurudakshina’. I was highly moved by the play. Why was Guru Drone so cruel to Ekalavya? Have you any answer?

Your loving friend,

Akash

March 16, 2023.

Dear Deep,

Winter is round the corner. There is a mild chill in the air. It is best time for outdoor adventures. What will you say about a picnic on Sunday next? You must be free on that day. Sujon, Bimal, Hiren – all are delighted at the proposal. We like that you also join us and enjoy the picnic. We shall cook food ourselves, play games and have the pleasure of boating. We shall also enjoy the entire afternoon sightseeing. It is going to be a great fun. I’m sure, you will not disappoint us.

As for the picnic spot we have thought of Panihati Picnic Garden. It is a charming place beside the Ganga. Have you any other option? We shall start at seven in the morning from my place. Please don’t fail to come in time.

Yours ever,

Sourav

Dear Rahul,

I have received your letter. I am happy that you like to read some good books. I would suggest you to read a few on the lives of great men. You will derive both pleasure and profit from these books.

The lives of great men are fill of exciting incidents. Napoleon was an ordinary boy. It is interesting to know how he became the emperor of France. Abraham Lincoln’s life is equally exciting. The lives of Raja Rammohan and Vidyasagar teach us how to overcome problems and difficulties that envelope life. Great men possess some extraordinary qualities that must be highly inspiring to all of us. Great men are, indeed, our philosophers and guides. Their lives enrich our thoughts and widen our vision.

You will find these books in your school library. Read some of them and feel their good effects on you.

With best of love and affection,

Yours truly,

Chhorda

5) Write a letter to a friend who wants you to come to his/ her village in the summer vacation.

June 10, 2023

My dear Sudipta,

Many Thanks for your kind and warm letter. You have asked me to visit your Village home in the coming vacation. I am so happy. I wish I could accept your invitation. It could be a relief from the repulsive heat of the city. Only once, my early childhood, I spent a few days at a village in Hooghly. I still cud its sweet memories. Here is an opportunity to live with nature again. But I am helpless. All time is not good time. Mother is I’ll, rather seriously. She is down with jaundice. Who will look after her in my absence? Only a daughter has the feelings of a daughter. I’m sorry, I can’t respond to your call this time.

Please don’t mind. I must be at your place, in the coming Puja days. With love.

Yours ever,

Sampa.

Dear Shovan,

I am in great joy today. Father took me to the Kolkata Book Fair. I really enjoyed this visit. I must tell you how I felt.

First the magnificent gateway surprised me. I entered the fairy- ground. There was a sea of men. Thousand of people crowded hundreds of bookstalls. The decorated stalls, bright lights and merry men created a festive air. I was a little confused. I could not decide which stalls I should visit. This was my first visit to such a big book fair. I have never seen so many book shops at one place. I was almost in a trance. At last I began to run from one stall to another. I brought some rare books. What a great delight it was to get the autographs of some great writers! For three hours I was in a world of joy. A lover of books like you will surely feel this.

Next year you must accompany us to this grand book fair. Agreed? Please write to me on what I have said in your next letter.

Yours sincerely,

Soumen.
